The Presence of God...

Through Christ, we can enter into the presence of God through the Eucharist:

With these arrangements for worship, the priests, in performing their service, go into the outer tabernacle repeatedly, but the high priest alone goes into the inner one once a year, not without blood that he offers for himself and for the sins of the people. In this way the holy Spirit shows that the way into the sanctuary had not yet been revealed while the outer tabernacle still had its place... But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that have come to be, passing through the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made by hands, that is, not belonging to this creation, he entered once for all into the sanctuary, not with the blood of goats and calves but with his own blood, thus obtaining eternal redemption.  -Hebrews 9:6-8,11-2 NAB

The Jewish custom was to only enter the presence of God in the Holy of Holies once a year, and only the high priest could go in.  One man.  Once a year.  That was it.  Like many other things, Christ changed all of that.

We often seem to take the presence of God in our lives for granted.  Ordinary Jewish people could not enjoy this experience.  Even the average temple priest could not.  Only the high priest had the privilege.

Today, we have the great honor and privilege of encountering God in the Eucharist.  We are blessed with this sacrament during Mass, and we can be in the presence of God in adoration.  How remarkable is that?

When not on display in an adoration chapel, the Host resides in the tabernacle.  This why we genuflect before entering the pew.  We are recognizing that we are in the presence of God in that moment, and we give Him the honor and respect that He deserves.

We have been given the gift to enter the presence of God.  How often do we make the most of this opportunity in adoration?  How well do we honor this in our reflections at Mass?  Never take God's presence in our lives too casually.
