Mass Requirement...

Going to Mass weekly is not just a requirement for Catholics - it's Biblical:

We should not stay away from our assembly, as is the custom of some, but encourage one another, and this all the more as you see the day drawing near.  -Hebrews 10:25 NAB

Why do we have to go to Mass?  Do we really have to go every week?  Yes!  There are some very good reasons for it.

The author of Hebrews tells us that we should not avoid our "assembly."  The Catholic Church has made attending Mass weekly one of the five Precepts of the Church.  There must be a valid reason.

Actually, there are many reasons to go to Mass.  We learn more about our faith in the Liturgy of the Word.  We connect with God directly through the Liturgy of the Eucharist.  And as the author of Hebrews points out, we can build bonds with our fellow Catholics and encourage each other.

The Mass requirement, then, is not just another rule in the Catholic Church; it guides us to deeper fellowship with one another.  We may not immediately see the impact that this can have on our lives, but as our relationships continue to grow, it will make a gigantic difference in our spiritual journeys.

In times of joy, we will celebrate together.  In times of sorrow, we will have plenty of shoulders to lean on.  In times of persecution, we can stand together against all enemies.  In times of victory, we can worship God together as one Church.

When we decide to miss or skip Mass each week, we are missing the beauty of God's Word, connecting with Christ through the Eucharist, and one that is often forgotten - the joy of our fellowship together.  We cannot build a community if we do not commune together.
