The Faith of Abraham, Part 2...

The faith of Abraham blessed him more greatly than he could have imagined:

By faith he received power to generate, even though he was past the normal age - and Sarah herself was sterile - for he thought that the one who had made the promise was trustworthy. So it was that there came forth from one man, himself as good as dead, descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sands on the seashore.  -Hebrews 11:11-12 NAB

God promised Abraham offspring, and when He fulfilled that promise, He did so abundantly.  God often answers our problems in ways beyond our wildest dreams.

In The Faith of Abraham, Part 1 from Hebrews 11:8, we saw how Abraham followed God's will without question, and it was an example of his great faith.  Today's story, however, does not reflect the same amount of faith at first.

Abraham began to lose hope of having a son with his wife, Sarah, so he took it upon himself to have one with Hagar instead.  This, of course, angered God, but that did not mean God would not fulfill his original promise.  Eventually, Abraham did have a son with Sarah named Isaac.

From his sons, Abraham became the father to "descendants as numerous as the stars."  God not only fulfilled His promise, but also fulfilled it abundantly.  God gave Abraham more descendants than He could have ever imagined.

From this story, we learn two things.  First, we need to be patient and allow God to answer our prayers when the time is right.  We cannot take matters into our own hands like Abraham.  Second, just when we begin to doubt God's ability to answer our prayers, that's when he surprises us the most.

There are times when we may begin to doubt that God will answer our prayers, but that's exactly when He answers them in greater ways than we could have ever imagined.
