The Faith of Moses, Part 4...

In today's verse, the faith of Moses shows us that God can make the impossible become possible:

By faith they crossed the Red Sea as if it were dry land, but when the Egyptians attempted it they were drowned.  -Hebrews 11:29, NAB

One of the most famous stories from the Old Testament is referred to in this verse.  As Moses is leading the people to the Promised Land, they are chased by the pharaoh to the Red Sea.  Caught between the Egyptians and the sea, God makes the impossible possible.

It is hard for us to imagine this scene.  Movies have tried to reenact it, but it is still difficult to visualize.  Can God really do this?  Can He carve out a path in the sea, raising huge walls of water on either side?

As impossible as this may seem, it reminds me of Christ's own words:

Jesus looked at them and said, "For human beings this is impossible, but for God all things are possible."  -Matthew 19:26, NAB

This verse (one of my wife's favorites) tells it all.  We often think in human terms.  We try to describe what is possible and impossible by what WE can do.  But it's not about what we can do; it's about what God can do.

In Exodus 14:1-2, Moses stretched his hand over the sea and watched it divide - not by his own power, but by God's.  Moses was the instrument of making the impossible possible.  He had faith in God's ability to perform miracles, and it saved the people from destruction.

We can be the instruments God uses to make the impossible become possible.  We may not part the Red Sea like Moses, but God can still do extraordinary things through us.  All it takes is faith.
