Heroes of the Old Testament...

The author of Hebrews tells us that the list of heroes of the Old Testament could go on and on:

What more shall I say? I have not time to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, who by faith conquered kingdoms, did what was righteous, obtained the promises; they closed the mouths of lions, put out raging fires, escaped the devouring sword; out of weakness they were made powerful, became strong in battle, and turned back foreign invaders.  -Hebrews 11:32-34, NAB

Over the past few weeks, we have been looking at Hebrews 11, where the author has described the faith of some of the great heroes of the Old Testament.  It began with Abel and continued through Joshua and Rahab.  Here are the heroes we spoke about:

  • Abel
  • Enoch
  • Noah
  • Abraham
  • Jacob
  • Joseph
  • Moses
  • Rahab

Now, the author lists a number of heroes that he did not cover, basically saying that he could go on and on about these Old Testament men and women of faith.  And it would be easy to do.  The Old Testament describes the struggles of many sinners, but it also highlights some fantastic acts of heroism.

Today's verse beautifully states, "out of weakness they were made powerful."  These were ordinary people who struggled with sin and temptation like you and me, but their faith in God empowered them to do great things.  Their faith was strong enough to be remembered these many generations later.

We often look at these heroes of the Old Testament from a distance, but we cannot forget that they were just ordinary people.  They were nothing special.  They were not superheroes with special powers and abilities; they simply had enough faith to allow God to do miraculous things in their lives.  In that way, we have the ability to follow in their footsteps.  All it takes is faith that God can use us for something far greater than we could have ever imagined.

Out of our weakness God can make us powerful.  Through faith, God can make ordinary people become extraordinary.  Are you living an extraordinary life?
