Luke 10:30-33...

On the sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus tells us that there is nothing more important than our moments with God:

As they continued their journey he entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary (who) sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me." The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her."  -Luke 10:38-42, NAB

Martha was upset that her sister was not helping her serve the people listening to Jesus.  She was doing all of the work while Mary sat with Christ.  Have you ever felt like you were the one doing all of the work at home, in your relationships, or in your parish?

Mary had the amazing opportunity to listen to the Lord, and she recognized how important this moment was - more important, in fact, than any amount of service that she could do.  So she decided to sit and listen - to have a moment with God Himself.

Sometimes, our spiritual life becomes more of a job than a way to connect with God.  We spend many hours each week working with different ministries, volunteering at our parishes, and serving those in need in the local community.

Our acts of service in our parishes and communities are important - they are a reflection of our faith - but they are not more important than the time we spend with God.  We still need to find time each week to spend with our Lord.

Has your spiritual life become a list of obligations and acts of service?  In the midst of your work for the Lord, do you still find time for adoration, Mass, reading Scripture, and prayer?

I have fallen into this same trap.  I spend hours and hours on this ministry each week (writing for the website, promoting the book, engaging with people on social media), but it leaves less time for daily Mass and other ways to connect with God.  Just recently, I got back into that good habit again.  What I do for Waking Up Catholic is important but does not compare with those moments in Mass each morning.

Today, in this weekend's verse, Jesus is inviting you to sit at His feet and listen for awhile.  Forget about all of the work that needs to be done for a moment and just listen.  Jesus wants to spend some time with you - without any distractions.

Can you spend a few moments with God this week?
