Sinful Weeds...

We cannot let sinful weeds destroy our communities:

See to it that no one be deprived of the grace of God, that no bitter root spring up and cause trouble, through which many may become defiled, that no one be an immoral or profane person like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit his father's blessing, he was rejected because he found no opportunity to change his mind, even though he sought the blessing with tears.  -Hebrews 12:15-17, NAB

The author of Hebrews warns us against allowing sin to take root within the Church - specifically the sin of Esau.  What was Esau's sin?  He sold his birthright for a bowl of soup?  A bowl of soup?  Yes, a bowl of soup.

Esau's birthright was no ordinary birthright.  He sold his birthright that came from his father, Isaac, to his brother, Jacob.  This birthright was a blessing that was then given to Jacob, and Jacob took on the name Israel - becoming the father of the twelve tribes of Israel.

A bowl of soup meant more to Esau than being the father of God's chosen nation.  Essentially, Esau's sin was putting his physical needs (his hunger) before his spiritual needs.  This same sin plagues us today as many people in the Western world quickly choose to put their physical needs before the spiritual.

Choices like these have a way of taking root like sinful weeds in a family, community, or society.  They quickly spread and lead others down the same path.  Eventually, they will overcome and destroy the spiritual fruits of the entire people.

Look at the United States, for example.  The nation is embracing sinful lifestyles, and it is forcing our beautiful faith out of the culture.  A few sinful weeds have multiplied into a sinful nation - leaving little room for morality based on faith in Christ.

If weeds become deep-rooted, it is almost impossible to take them out without destroying everything around them.  For Esau, it was too late.  I pray that it is not too late for the United States and the rest of the Western world.  I hope that the culture is not destroyed when God comes to pull out the sinful weeds.

Sin will continue spreading like a weed in our culture if we do not do something about it.  At this point, only through Christ will we be able to turn this field of sinful weeds into a meadow of beautiful flowers.
