Living in Fear...

The author of Hebrews tells us about the difference between the two covenants and that we no longer have to live in fear:

You have not approached that which could be touched and a blazing fire and gloomy darkness and storm... Indeed, so fearful was the spectacle that Moses said, "I am terrified and trembling." No, you have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and countless angels in festal gathering, and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven, and God the judge of all, and the spirits of the just made perfect, and Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and the sprinkled blood that speaks more eloquently than that of Abel.  -Hebrews 12:18,21-24, NAB

The verse begins by telling us about the Old Covenant.  The Israelites were thankful for their covenant with God, but they were fearful of Him.  Even Moses was "terrified and trembling."  The Israelites had to live in constant fear of God's judgment for their actions.

With the New Covenant, our fear goes away.  We have a new Mediator in Christ Jesus, and we no longer live in fear.  Yes, God can still punish the world as He punished the Israelites, but Christ gives us hope for something better.

The author is making a final appeal to the Hebrews.  He is trying to convince them that there is a better way through Christ, just as we constantly try to show the same thing to the world today.

I know that I am unworthy of God's love and forgiveness.  I know that I am not worthy to be saved.  But I also know that I have a God who loves me - a God who loves me enough to send His own Son to the cross for my sins.  With Christ, I have found the hope that can overcome any fear.

The people of the world live in fear for one reason: they do not know Christ.  Let's show the world the peace and hope that can only come from our Savior.
