Entertaining Angels...

Show love to everyone, for we do not know when we might actually be entertaining angels:

Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels.  -Hebrews 13:1-2, NAB

The mutual love the author is telling us about is not a new concept.  Over and over again, we are told to love our neighbor as ourselves.  Most know from Scripture that when we help others, Jesus will one day say in return:

"Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me." -Matthew 25:40, NAB

In today's verse, the author tells us that we may unknowingly be entertaining angels when we do good for others.  The homeless man on the street, the stranger that knocks at our door, and others who need our help may actually be angels in disguise.

While we may not know how often this truly happens, it is an interesting concept.  What if you knew the stranger in need was an angel?  Of course, you would help without hesitation.  How do we know that the people we help aren't angels?  With that in mind, shouldn't we help everyone we can - just in case?

Whether they are an angel or not, let's go back to the quote from Matthew 25.  By helping others, we are helping Christ.  Feed a hungry man, and we feed Christ.  Show compassion to a widow, and we show compassion to Christ.  Nurse the sick, and we nurse Christ.  Be a friend to the friendless, and we are a friend to Christ.

Show love and compassion to everyone you meet because, as today's verse tells us, they just might be an angel in disguise.  Even if they're not, we know that by loving them we are loving Christ.  What more reason do we need than that?
