Luke 11:9-10...

On the seventeenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus tells His disciples to ask, seek, and knock:

"And I tell you, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."  -Luke 11:9-10, NAB

It was difficult to choose which verse to focus on this weekend because it included both Christ teaching His followers the Our Father and His teaching on ask, seek, and knock, but after taking them in context with the other verses of the week, I chose ask, seek, and knock.

In the Old Testament reading, from Genesis 18:20-32, Abraham asks God to save the innocent people of Sodom before He destroyed it, and God answered His prayer.  From Colossians 2:12-14, we are told of God's mighty power.  And in the Responsorial Psalm, we reflect on Psalm 138:

When I cried out, you answered; you strengthened my spirit.  -Psalm 138:3

Each of these readings points us to God having the power to answer our prayers, so as we follow Christ's teaching about ask, seek, and knock, we know that our prayers are not in vain.  God has the power to answer our prayers, we simply need to begin by asking.

God will answer the prayers you ask of Him.  It may not be the answer you were hoping for, but He will answer nonetheless.  Likewise, He will help you find what you seek, even if what you find is something you never expected.  And He will open the door when you knock, but we may be surprised to see what's on the other side.

The key to this teaching is that it takes action on our part.  God cannot answer our prayers if we never ask.  God cannot help us find anything if we never seek.  God cannot open the door if we never knock.  Ask, seek, and knock, and you might be amazed at what happens next.
