Luke 12:20-21...

On the eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus tells His disciples a parable about a man who was rich in this world but not rich in what matters to God:

"...The things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?" Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.  -Luke 12:20-21, NAB

The parable starts out by telling us about the bountiful harvest the man had grown.  It was so large, in fact, that he needed to build larger barns just to hold it all.  He had enough wealth to take care of himself for many years to come.

The man was pleased with himself; however, God was not pleased with him.  That is when God approaches him and asks him what will happen to his riches if he passes away.

If God asked you the same question, how would you answer?  Have you been storing up the treasures of this world while neglecting what really matters - trying to store up riches in heaven?

When (and if) we get to heaven, the riches of this world will not matter.  The size of your home will not matter.  The amount of money in your bank account will not matter.  The number of cars, boats, motorcycles, and toys you own will not matter.  Keeping up with the Joneses will not matter.

What could the man in the parable do differently?  What can we do differently?

The man had enough wealth to share his blessings with those in need around him.  Instead of hoarding it all to himself, he could have blessed many others.  By giving his treasures of this world to those in need, he would have been storing riches in heaven.

We can do the same.  If God has blessed us financially, we need to share that gift with the world.  If you live in Western society, you are probably wealthier than most of the world, many of whom live on less than $2 a day.  Just by the fact that you are reading this website on a computer means that you are already wealthier than many.

Stop focusing on storing up treasures in this world.  One day, we shall all pass away, and our wealth in this world will not matter.  Instead, we need to focus on being rich in what matters to God.  Give of yourself, and God will give plenty back to you.
