Giving Time and Money....

The author of Hebrews highlights the importance of giving time and money:

Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have; God is pleased by sacrifices of that kind.  -Hebrews 13:16, NAB

Again, we look back to the Jewish temple and a comparison to the sacrifices made at the altar.  Today's verse tells us that our gifts of good deeds, time, and money are sacrifices that we can offer to God.

By no means does this mean that our offerings of time and money gain us atonement for our sins in the same way the Jewish people received atonement at the altar.  Instead, they are simply our gift back to God whose Son already paid for our sins.

If we do not gain anything by these sacrifices, why offer them?  If giving time and money does not atone for our sins, what's the point?

When we receive a gift from someone, especially for more formal occasions, we send a "Thank You" card to them in gratitude.  Think of our gifts of time and money as little "Thank You" cards to God for the gifts He has given us.

Spending an hour feeding the poor or dropping money in the offering plate may not seem like a big deal, but God appreciates it either way.  He recognizes the sacrifices we make and is pleased by them.

There is truly no way that we can ever thank God enough for the gifts He has given us, but we can still try.  Offer your time and money as sacrifices to God, and He surely will be pleased.
