Luke 12:51-53...

On the twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus warns His disciples that following Him may lead us to a house divided by faith:

"Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. From now on a household of five will be divided, three against two and two against three; a father will be divided against his son and a son against his father, a mother against her daughter and a daughter against her mother, a mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law."  -Luke 12:51-53, NAB

Faith in Christ has the power to unite families, but it can also divide them.  Our faith will lead us down a path that goes against mainstream society.  While our families follow the path of society, we go in the opposite direction.

The Christian life often requires a radical change to the way we live, and some of the people closest to us will not understand.  It can be difficult to follow the path Christ has paved before us when our families do not understand, but we must follow it anyway.

Have you faced this situation?  Has Christ led you somewhere that your family did not understand?

We may find ourselves in a house divided by faith, but we should never give up praying for our families.  Everyone comes to faith at different times in their lives.  It may be in God's plan to use you as the catalyst to make it happen.

When (and if) someone in your family finds faith, it will go from being the great dividing factor between you to the strongest bond imaginable.  You will not only be brother and sister, parent and child, grandparent and granchild, but also brother and sister in Christ.  You will have a bond that transcends your common gene pool.

Differences in faith and values may lead to a house divided.  Our faith in Christ may separate us, but it can also be what brings us closer together.  May God unite our families with a common love for Christ and faith in the Risen King.
