Tempted by God?....

When we face trials, are we being tempted by God?

No one experiencing temptation should say, "I am being tempted by God"; for God is not subject to temptation to evil, and he himself tempts no one. Rather, each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire conceives and brings forth sin, and when sin reaches maturity it gives birth to death.  -James 1:13-15, NAB

All too often, when someone falls to temptation, we see them shift the blame to God.  They claim that it was God's fault that they were being tempted in the first place, and they refuse to accept responsibility for their own actions.

Our modern culture seems to have a problem with taking ownership for our own mistakes.  We are constantly looking to point the finger at someone else, and in some cases, that includes pointing the finger at God.  When we fall to temptation, we claim that the fault is His.

But can we be tempted by God?  Is He just testing us?

Temptation draws us to evil, and God is void of all evil.  Therefore, He cannot be the one tempting us.  We cannot point the finger at God because it would be impossible for Him to do such a thing.

Instead, we need to look at the darkness of our own hearts.  It is our rejection of God that leads us to temptation.  When we walk apart from Him, even for a short time, we open ourselves to temptation - temptation that comes from within.

The first step, then, is to accept where temptation comes from.  We need to stop pointing fingers and start accepting our mistakes.  We cannot correct our faults if we are too busy making excuses for them.

God is not the source of temptation, so stop blaming Him for your sins.  Accept the consequences of your actions and begin to get your life on the right track again.
