Luke 14:26-27...

On the twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus tells us what it takes to be a disciple of Christ:

"If any one comes to me without hating his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple. Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple."  -Luke 14:26-27, NAB

Earlier this week, I was blessed to hear Jeff Cavins give a talk about what it means to be a disciple of Christ, and fittingly, it is the topic of this weekend's Gospel.

In his presentation, Cavins told us how Jewish kids grew up to become rabbis, and one important step to making it happen was leaving everything behind, including family, to follow another rabbi full-time.  If a young man chose to become a rabbi himself, he first had to become a disciple of that rabbi.

This weekend's verse challenges us to do the same thing.  If we want to become a disciple of Christ, we have to put him first in our lives - above everything.  Our relationship with Him has to be the most important aspect of our lives.

Now, we will hopefully not have to hate our families, or our own life, but we should be willing to forsake everything precious to us.  We need to be willing to carry this cross.  Obviously, this can be easier said than done.

Cavins gave this powerful presentation to my company, Catholic Word (one of the perks of my day job), but you can have the opportunity to hear it too.  On September 16, 2013, Jeff is giving this presentation in a FREE, online webinar at 6:30 p.m Eastern.  If you have the opportunity, I encourage you to attend.  There will be a second opportunity on September 24, as well.

Being a disciple of Christ requires the willingness to give up everything to follow Him.  Put Christ first in your life, and He will guide you to an amazing, new life.
