Doers of the Word....

Do we take action?  Are we doers of the Word?

Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his own face in a mirror. He sees himself, then goes off and promptly forgets what he looked like. But the one who peers into the perfect law of freedom and perseveres, and is not a hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, such a one shall be blessed in what he does.  -James 1:22-25, NAB

This verse may seem straightforward enough, but it is one that everyone struggles with from time to time.  We fall into the rut of being a spectator and forget that we are meant to get involved.

We sit in the pew each week watching Mass.  We read a stack of books on theology and faith.  We listen to CDs and audio books that help us learn more about our beliefs.  We see others actively helping out around the parish on our way out the door.  The examples could go on and on.

In a couple of these examples, we are doing something that would seem to help us grow in our faith, and they should.  They are excellent ways to learn and grow.  Reading books and listening to CDs can be very beneficial.  Why, then, did I include them in the list?

Because it is less about what you are doing, and more about what you are NOT doing.  You are being a hearer of the Word but not a doer of the Word.  You're soaking in some great information; however, you're not doing anything with it.  What's the point of knowing the faith if you don't live it?

We are not called to be students; we are called to be workers.  Learn the faith, gain the tools you need, then go out and do something with them.  The work of the Church is never done.
