Luke 16:10...

On the twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus challenges us to be trustworthy:

"The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters is also dishonest in great ones."  -Luke 16:10, NAB

What does it mean to be trustworthy?  Can you define it?  We all want to trust others, and we hope they trust us in return - but who is really trustworthy?

Today's verse seems to tell us that we need to look beyond the large aspects of life.  Often times, if someone is trustworthy, they are trustworthy in all matters - regardless of how small.

Would you loan someone your car if you did not trust that them with fifty dollars?  Would you allow someone to babysit your children if they had a hard time raising a pet?  Before you trust someone with the big things, see if they can handle the small things first.

On the flip side, do people trust us?  Do we faithfully take care of the small things and instill a sense of trust in them?

In both scenarios, something we often overlook is the dishonesty that comes from our mouth.  Someone trust us with a secret, but then we are quick to gossip and share it with others.  We lie about others to make ourselves look better.  If people cannot trust the words that come out of our mouth, how can they trust us with anything else?

Being trustworthy means being honest and dependable in all matters, large or small.  Whether someone is trusting you with their child or their most closely guarded secret, being trustworthy in all things will earn you the respect of many.
