1 Timothy 6:9-12...

On the twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we are warned about the love of money:

Those who want to be rich are falling into temptation and into a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all evils, and some people in their desire for it have strayed from the faith and have pierced themselves with many pains. But you, man of God, avoid all this. Instead, pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Compete well for the faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses.  -1 Timothy 6:9-12, NAB

The actual verse from this weekend's Mass begins with 1 Timothy 6:11-16, but I added verses 9 and 10 to add to the context.  When St. James said to "avoid all this," I thought it would help to know what he was referring to.

We are told that "the love of money is the root of all evils."  That is some strong, powerful language.  The root of all evils?  Obviously, greed can have a powerful impact on our lives.

Surely, we have all heard something similar to this at one point or another.  So why do we continue to pursue our love of money?  Why do we let our financial situations dictate our happiness?  Why do we measure our worth by the size of our bank accounts?

St. James's timeless words continue to ring true today.  The love of money is not only pursued, but also embraced.  Yet we wonder why society continues to slide.  Our destruction begins with our pursuit of the almighty dollar.

How do you avoid this?  How can you live a life free from the shackles of greed?

Let go of your need for more stuff, and embrace your need for more Christ.  The love of money leads to nowhere.  The love of Christ leads to eternity.  The wealth you attain in this world will soon pass away, but the wealth you store in heaven will last forever.
