Luke 17:7-9...

On the twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus reminds us what it truly means to be faithful servants:

"Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, 'Come here immediately and take your place at table'? Would he not rather say to him, 'Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink. You may eat and drink when I am finished'? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded?"  -Luke 17:7-9, NAB

This verse comes immediately after the disciples ask Jesus to increase their faith.  Jesus responded with the famous verse about having faith the size of a mustard seed.  He continues with this verse above, and in essence, He is saying:

Who are we to ask Jesus for anything?  He will provide us what we need when the time is right.

It sounds harsh, doesn't it?  Jesus is comparing us to the servants in this analogy and telling us that our duty is to continue working as faithful workers of the field.  We will receive what we ask for when the time is right.

As Christians, we should not be focused on what we receive from God, but what we can give to Him.  We are called to offer our labors, our sacrifices, our very lives in service to Him.  One day, when our work is done, we will be able to join Him at the table.

Are you a faithful servant?  Do you spend more time focused on what God can offer you than what you can offer God?  Work hard and devote your life to God, and when the time is right, good things will come.
