Titus 3:9...

It's time that we get back to basics in the Church:

Avoid foolish arguments, genealogies, rivalries, and quarrels about the law, for they are useless and futile.  -Titus 3:9, NAB

Recently, the pope was interviewed by a group of Jesuit publications, and it didn't take long for there to be a media storm about it.  As straightforward as the pope's words seemed, it was interpreted in wildly different ways.

This isn't the first time that this has happened.  Since he first took over the pontificate, Pope Francis has been misquoted multiple times, and the mainstream media has put a spin on everything he has said.

They claim that he is changing the Church's stance on gay marriage, abortion, and a host of other topics.  If we, as Catholics, listen to closely to the mainstream media, we might become confused.  Is Pope Francis really changing the Church's stance on these important issues?

No.

If the pope has said anything about these matters, it is in relation today's verse.  We have spent a lot of time over the past few decades fighting within the Church over silly arguments.  By focusing more on our own internal struggles, we have lost our external, evangelistic focus.

From my perspective, the pope wants us to re-focus ourselves on sharing love and mercy.  While the intellectual pursuits of our faith are important, are faith grows and extends through our compassion and love.  He is not changing the Church's stance on anything; he is simply correcting our course.

The pope's words have been twisted frequently since he took office, but let this be clear: Pope Francis wants us to be a Church that focuses itself on sharing the love of Christ with the world.
