Resist the Devil....

The only way to resist the devil is to acknowledge that he exists first:

So submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.  -James 4:7, NAB

In modern culture, some have turned the devil into a representation of evil.  He is seen merely as a mythological creature that reflects human weakness and sinfulness, but he is much more than that.  The devil is real, whether you want to believe it or not.

A film named Constantine put it best.  When one character said, "I don't believe in the devil."  Constantine replied, "You should.  He believes in you."

I don't spend a lot of time talking about fire and brimstone on this site, but when it plainly comes up in a verse, I will not avoid it either.  The same goes for the devil.  We may not think or talk about him much - but we should!

The only way to resist the devil and the influence he has over our lives is to acknowledge that he exists.  We need to accept his presence around us.  When you get jealous over another's possessions, the devil is there.  When you look at someone with lustful eyes, the devil is there.  When addiction threatens your relationships, the devil is there.  When you begin to lose hope and faith, the devil is surely there.

We cannot defeat him on our own.  Our strength and abilities are no match for the devil.  But the power of Christ can overcome anything the devil throws at us.  Put your life in God's hands, and the devil will quickly flee.

The only power the devil will have over us is the power we allow him to have.  To resist the devil, then, we need to stop resisting Christ first.  With God in our hearts, we can stand up to the devil and his wicked ways.
