2 Timothy 3:14-17...

On the twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we learn about the power and beauty of Sacred Scripture:

But you, remain faithful to what you have learned and believed, because you know from whom you learned it, and that from infancy you have known (the) sacred scriptures, which are capable of giving you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for refutation, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that one who belongs to God may be competent, equipped for every good work.  -2 Timothy 3:14-17, NAB

These beautiful passages highlight the importance of Sacred Scripture and the impact it can have on our lives.  St. Paul's words here still have a powerful impact on our faith today.

At the time St. Paul wrote this, the formal canon of the New Testament had not been established.  Surely, the fact that this letter to Timothy would eventually become part of our Sacred Scripture attests to that fact.  So St. Paul was likely referring to the Jewish Sacred Scriptures of the Old Testament.

Within the next couple of centuries, the Sacred Scriptures came together as we know them today, and now, we can see how this verse applies to the entire Bible as all of Sacred Scripture is inspired by God.

From an early age, the Jewish people and the early Christians were taught the Sacred Scriptures.  Today, we follow a similar practice.  We send our children through religious education classes to learn the foundations of the faith.

Of course, some of us did not learn the Scriptures at an early age, but Scripture is inpsired by God either way.  So whether we learned it as a child or not, it can still have an impact on who we become today.  Scripture still guides us on the path to salvation through Christ.

As St. Paul tells us, Scripture equips us "for every good work."  In essence, it teaches how we should live our faith as a Christian.  It is the instruction manual given to us by authors inspired by the Holy Spirit.

If life is a classroom, the Bible is the textbook.  Our beautiful Sacred Scripture is inspired by God and serves as a primary resource for growing in faith.  However, the only way to learn from it is to open it once in awhile.  Immerse yourself in Scripture, and God will give you the knowledge and tools you need for a life with Christ.
