Matthew 10:14...

Sometimes, you just have to know when to walk away:

"Whoever will not receive you or listen to your words - go outside that house or town and shake the dust from your feet."  -Matthew 10:14, NAB

These words were part of Jesus' command to the twelve apostles as they left to spread the Gospel.  Jesus knew that they would run into people that just wouldn't listen, and when that happens, it is best to walk away and not look back.

To "shake the dust from your feet" means that you are leaving behind everything that you just encountered - even the little bit of dust on your shoes.  So when we decide to move on, we cannot hold onto even the smallest bit of the past.

When would we do this?  When would we have to know when to walk away?

Jesus was speaking to the apostles about spreading the Gospel, so we can apply it in the same way.  In our efforts to evangelize, the message will not always be well-received.  Actually, that may happen more often than we think.  When that happens, we need to simply let go and move forward.

This includes leaving behind our disappointment.  It can be discouraging when we fail to make an evangelistic impact, but it happens.  We cannot let that stop us.  We need to move on and not take any sadness or regreat along with us.

One of our primary goals as Christians is to share our faith with others, but occasionally, it will not be well received.  If you find yourself in this situation, know when to walk away, shake the dust from your feet, and continue moving forward.
