Judge Your Neighbor....

Today's verse asks the question, "Who are you to judge your neighbor?"

Do not speak evil of one another, brothers. Whoever speaks evil of a brother or judges his brother speaks evil of the law and judges the law. If you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is one lawgiver and judge who is able to save or to destroy. Who then are you to judge your neighbor?  -James 4:11-12, NAB

You have probably read and heard from other verses that you should not judge your neighbor, but James 4 takes that concept to another level.  St. James states that if you judge your neighbor, you are also judging God and His law.

Who are you to judge the Almighty?

By acting as a judge of the law, you are judging God's ability to do the job Himself.  God does not need your help judging others.  He's got it handled.  You should spend more time figuring out how you can better follow the law yourself than judging the actions of others.

You may be a student of the law. You may know everything there is to know about the Catholic faith (does anyone really?). But if you spend more time telling others how to follow the law than putting it into practice yourself, what good is that knowledge?  If one of the major rules is not to judge others, your efforts to follow the rest of the law matter little.

Knowing the law is important, but following it is more important.  Scripture tells us not to judge others, so stop worrying about what everyone else is doing and focus on your own life.  Leave the judgment to God - I'm sure He can handle the task without you.
