The Best Laid Plans....

We are reminded that our best laid plans are subject to God's will:

Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we shall go into such and such a town, spend a year there doing business, and make a profit" - you have no idea what your life will be like tomorrow. You are a puff of smoke that appears briefly and then disappears. Instead you should say, "If the Lord wills it, 9 we shall live to do this or that."  -James 4:13-15, NAB

There is an old saying that goes, "The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry."  In other words, as hard as we may try, we can plan all we want, but we do not always get the results we had hoped for.

This old saying refers to plans that go awry, but from a faith perspective, we recognize that our plans may not be going in the wrong direction at all.  In fact, it may have been God's will all along.

I never imagined that my career would take the course that it did.  Growing up, I never imagined feeling lost after high school.  I didn't expect to take a 6-year detour in the military.  I never planned to begin college at almost 30 years-old.  Nothing went according to plan.

Yet each of those experiences have made me who I am today.  The diversity of my background has equipped me to do more than I could have ever imagined, and the destination was still the same.  In 1997, I hoped to go into a computer-related career, and now - over 15 years later - I am exactly where I hoped to be.

The moral of the story is that we can have a goal and destination in mind, but we need to be open to God's path to get there.  And sometimes, we may not reach the destination we hoped for because God has a better one in mind.

The best laid plans are nothing compared to the will of the Lord.  Set your own plans aside, and trust in God's plan for your life.  The outcome may be far better than you could have ever expected.
