Proud of Our Wealth....

Are we proud of our wealth?  We need to be careful of that pride for it might cause damage to our soul:

But now you are boasting in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil.  -James 4:16, NAB

This verse continues from yesterday's verse - especially James 4:13, which states, "Come now, you who say, 'Today or tomorrow we shall go into such and such a town, spend a year there doing business, and make a profit.'"  The boasting and arrogance, then, refers back to making a profit.

Verses 14 and 15 challenged us to follow God's will - not our own.  Verse 16 tells us that this idea was rejected, and instead, they chose to pursue profit and be proud of it.

This does not sound too different from today's society.  We are often measured by the size of our paychecks.  Our bank accounts are a large part of our net worth.  We are proud of our wealth, but we must realize that our true value does not have a dollar sign in front of it.

Even the opposite can be damaging.  We look at others in envy, which leads to a different kind of evil.  But even the poor in the West are generally richer than most of the world.  Still, we may see little value in our own lives as we look at those around us.

You're not alone if you feel this way.  Everyone struggles with this to some extent.  I do.  Worrying about how to provide for my family is a constant battle.  I say that I trust in God's will, but like everyone else, I still worry about our future.

You are worth more than a dollar sign followed by a handful of numbers.  The size of your paycheck does not make you a success, so stop worrying about the size of your bank account.  Love Jesus with your whole heart, and follow God's will.  If you do, your life will be worth far more than your monthly bank statement.
