Wealth Rots Away....

We may find security in our finances, but eventually, financial wealth rots away:

Come now, you rich, weep and wail over your impending miseries. Your wealth has rotted away, your clothes have become moth-eaten, your gold and silver have corroded, and that corrosion will be a testimony against you; it will devour your flesh like a fire. You have stored up treasure for the last days. -James 5:1-3, NAB

Over the next few verses of the Book of St. James, we will learn how the pursuit of money and possessions will only lead us to destruction.  We began this discussion at the end of Chapter 4, and it continues at the beginning of Chapter 5.

St. James is warning those who are rich today that their good fortunes will not last.  Their worldly prosperity will not translate into heavenly prosperity.

The imagery of this verse describes how wealth rots away, clothes become tattered, and even precials metals - like gold and silver - will corrode.  The point is that we cannot stake our futures on something that will not last forever.

What is the alternative?  Faith in Christ leads to treasures in heaven - treasures that will not rot, become tattered, or ever corrode.  The treasures we build up in heaven will last forever.

What matters to you?  Do you spend your life worrying about the size of your bank account, or do you focus your energies on serving Christ and His Church?  Do you measure your life by your pay stub, or by the positive impact you can have on others?  Are you more worried about retiring early, or finding ways to work for the Lord?

All financial wealth rots away.  Even the most precious metals will someday corrode.  Focus your life on building up the only treasures that will last - the treasures we build up in heaven.
