Revelation 7:9-10...

On All Saints Day, from today's Mass readings, we read this verse:

After this I had a vision of a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation, race, people, and tongue. They stood before the throne and before the Lamb, wearing white robes and holding palm branches in their hands. They cried out in a loud voice: "Salvation comes from our God, who is seated on the throne, and from the Lamb."  -Revelation 7:9-10, NAB

While Halloween gets most of the attention in Western culture, today - All Saints Day - is a special day.  Today, we remember all of the saints, known and unknown, that came before us.

It is a wonderful time for us to remember those who came before us and the loved ones that we have lost, who we hope have become saints themselves.  We honor those who had the endurance to finish the race.

Personally, in my life, I want to honor the loss of my brother-in-law, my mentor, my friend - Thomas Nejmeh.  He was a major influence in my conversion to Catholicism, and to this day, I still miss him greatly.  It has been just over six months since his passing, but it still feels like yesterday.

The hope that we find in today's verse is that there is a great multitude of saints in heaven.  They are standing before Christ right now having the most amazing worship experience we could ever imagine.  I pray that Tom and the loved ones you have lost are there now.

For many, the Halloween celebrations of ghouls and goblins are not yet over, but for me, my attention has already shifted to the true focus of the holiday: remembering the multitude of saints in heaven.  May your All Saints Day be a blessed day indeed.
